William Robert "Skip" Gavlak, 72, of Monongahela,(Carroll Township), died Wednesday, May 18, 2011 in the Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Pittsburgh. He was born October 6, 1938 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of William James and Helen Sylvia Kolar Gavlak.

While in high school, Skip played in a band with his family. Their band entitled "Gavlakís Gay Timers" played a variety of music, especially polkas. Until 1966, he, along with his father and brothers operated the Ginger Hill Farm Market. Skip then worked for US Steel as an inspector for twenty one years. Currently, he was the owner and president of W.R. Gavlak General Contractors. Skip had a passion for cooking, a self taught chef who catered for many years and thoroughly enjoyed eating his cooking as much as preparing it. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. Every year, he and his granddaughter, Katelynn planted a vegetable garden together, as well as taking an active interest in her sports activites and her musical abilities. His grandson Josh, helped him with his grass cutting jobs and enjoyed going camping together. Besides his family, a few of Skipís other enjoyments were his poodle Bailey and his knack for being a practical joker. He will be truly missed by his family and friends, all of whom dearly loved him.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Eileen "Kit" Salaske Gavlak; four children, Alice (Gavlak) Dove and husband Claude of Monongahela, Robert Curdie (Gavlak) and wife Kristine of Venetia, Kathy (Gavlak) Hill and husband John of New Eagle, James Gavlak and Joanne Messina of Monongahela; two grandchildren, Katelynn Ann Hill and Joshua William Gavlak; two brothers, Edward "Sonny" Gavlak and wife Thelma of Acme, David Gavlak and wife Lucille of Sumners, CT; two sisters, Agnes Sikorski and husband Roland of Gary, Indiana and Anita Fosbrink and husband Tim of Connellsville.

Friends will be received on Saturday, May 21, from 7-9 PM and Sunday, May 22, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the Frye Funeral Home, Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where services will be held on Monday, May 23, at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Mark Woomer, officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery.
