There have been a number of Forward Township residents who have achieved some level of fame in the realm of sports.   This page serves to acknowledge those people and their achievements.

If you know of other people, or other teams, who should be recognized, please contact me via email.

Ron Necciai Born in Gallatin, Ron played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1952.   He achieved one of the rarest accomplishments in the sport of baseball.  He struck out 27 batters in one game.  The following hyperlinks display articles about this man that the legendary baseball icon Branch Rickey said was harder to hit than hall-of-fame pitcher Dizzy Dean:     Link # 1;   Link # 2;   Link # 3 Link # 4.

Gallatin Soccer Club Wins National Championship Soccer Team - 1942

A  National Championship soccer team from Forward Township?  The Gallatin Soccer Club aka Gallatin Tigers won the US Open Cup in 1942.  They beat the Pawtucket FC. to become the US Champion.  The following hyperlinks take you to a number of sites relating to that event:  The US Open Cup website describes the league.  On the opening page, at the bottom, Gallatin's achievement in 1942 is acknowledged.  On a website Entitled, "Italians of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania", there is a picture (bottom of page 86) of that 1942 team - it is the second picture in the listing of pictures.  Another website entitled, "Tell Me About: The US Open Cup," gives a history of the US Open Cup and recognizes the Gallatin achievement.  If you have pictures or newspaper articles relating to this event, we would love to copy them and add them to this site.  You can contact me by clicking on the following hyperlink to get a pre-addressed email.

Part II - 1942 Gallatin Soccer Club -- aka "Gallatin Tigers"

In response to the request for information on the 1942 Gallatin Soccer Club, NICK  PASCARELLA provided a wealth of information and pictures.   The first item is a 1998 article **** in the Pittsburgh-Gazette commemorating the team's achievement, with details regarding the effect some of those team members had on future generations.   Nick also provided this original and priceless Picture of the 1942 team for us to copy -- you will notice that Nick's father (Alex Pascarella)  is the player in the lower right hand corner of the photo.  The men in the photograph are as follows:  Top row, left to right:  Chuck Lyons, John Roman, Elgie Grant, Bernie Visnick, Charles Walters, James Harrison, Chuck Lewis, and John Luba;   Bottom Row, left to right:   Danny Valentine, Mimmie Quattrone, Harry Sickles, and Alex Pascarella.  This next Picture, entitled Sentimental Showcase, is from a copy of an old new clipping - it shows the members of the 1942 Team and the Trophy they won.   The next document is a page, retyped from a newspaper article, that provides some history about the Gallatin Tigers.

The "Gallatin Tigers" of 1942 Left A Tradition of Excellence

The "Gallatin Tigers" left a tradition that had an impact in following generations.   Their sons and the friends of their sons not only played soccer, they became coaches.  Tom DeRosa and Nick Pascarella were two of those who played and coached.  Some of their coaching successes are shown in the following newspaper pictures:  The first picture is of the 2000 Elizabeth Forward Vipers  team that took third place in the Monroeville Under 10 Indoor Soccer league.  Note that Nick Pascarella of Gallatin is one of the coaches.  The next picture is of the 2003 Elizabeth Forward Vipers team that rode a 16-0 record to the Monroeville Indoor Kicks League championship.  This Daily News picture dated 2005 shows the Seventh & Eight grade Elizabeth Forward Soccer Team that won Section 4 with a perfect 14-0 record.  Again, note that Nick Pascarella, a son of one of the men on the 1942 USA Championship team, is one of the coaches.

Tom DeRosa

Tom DeRosa:    In addition to the several successful businesses he has owned and operated, Tom has enjoyed a number of athletic successes, both as a player and a coach.  In 2000 his various endeavors earned him induction into the Elizabeth Forward Alumni and Friends Association's Hall of Fame.  The Hall of  Fame induction article (click here to view) very nicely summarizes Tom business achievements, and it provides a glimpse into his successes in golf, soccer, dog training, coaching, and of course football.

The following are additional articles and pictures - click on the blue item number to view:   Item 1.  Picture and article show Tom with his Pittsburgh Steeler roommate Rocky Bleier.
